15/01/18Why You Should Become A Vegetarian A vegetarian is a person who does not eat or does not believe in eating meat, fish, or, in some cases, any food that comes from animals, like eggs or cheese. A vegetarian diet consists of  vegetables, fruits, nuts, and grain. When people are not vegetarian it contributes to, “ecological problems, like rising temperatures, and the depletion of the earth’s resources,” including its water supply. What we should also consider is feeding people versus feeding animals.  Instead of fattening up a pig or chicken we could feed children in a third-world country.

Eating meat also has health consequences. Many people believe being a vegetarian is healthier for you. This paper will indicate why a person should consider becoming a vegetarian, if not for the environment but for yourself and to feed people rather than animals. The ecological problems of being vegetarian are “tropical forests are destroyed daily, to create more farmland to raise animals. By supporting the meat industry, we are destroying irreplaceable forests that filters our air.  “The meat industry also uses large amounts of oil, as the process requires “more than eight times as much fossil fuel energy than production of plant protein while yielding animal protein that is only 1.4 times more nutritious.” By supporting the meat industry, we are not only destroying resources we are destroying earth’s balance by contributing to global warming.

“On average, 40% of global grain production is used to feed livestock, although in richer countries the proportion of grain used for animal feed is around 70%.”  Imagine if we took all the food crops farmed to feed animals and gave it to starving third world countries. A study predicted “around 70% more food would be added to the world’s supply, which would be enough to feed 4 billion additional people.” “Another study stated about 70 percent of all grain produced in the United States is fed to animals raised for slaughter.

” “The seven billion livestock animals in the United States consume five times as much grain as is consumed directly by the American population.”  These facts support my argument that we should be growing food to feed people and prevent starvation in other countries. Eating meat can also be tied to disease and other health problems. Meat eating increases the risk of heart disease.

Being a vegetarian can assist with cancer prevention. “Of all the natural cancer prevention substances found: vitamin C, B-17, hydroquinones, beta carotene, NDGA, – none has been found to be animal derived.” As well most meats, when cooked, produce “benzenes and other carcinogenic compounds.” Cancer is easier to prevent than cure. For example, “soybeans contain protease inhibitor, a powerful anticancer compound.”  “It is not found in useful quantities in animal based food.”As well, animal foods contain high concentrations of agricultural chemicals when compared to plant foods.

This also includes pesticides and herbicides. We also ingest livestock drugs when we eat meat. “There are over 20,000 different drugs, including sterols, antibiotics, growth hormones and other veterinary drugs that are given to livestock animals.”   These go into our digestive system when we eat meat.  So why are we eating meat, we are poisoning our body with chemicals given to animals to fatten them up for us to eat.         There is also “a correlation between meat consumption and a wide range of degenerative diseases that includes: Osteoporosis; Kidney Stones and Gallstones; Diabetes; Multiple Sclerosis; Arthritis; Gum disease; Acne and Obesity.”It is stated that “only 3.

2 of Americans are vegetarians”, but “vegetarians outlive others by six years.” Being a vegetarian has no negative health benefit when compared to a diet that includes meat.  There is no nutrient necessary for humans which cannot be obtained from plants. We need to change our ways.  Eating meat is destroying forests that clean our air.

It is healthier to eat vegetables as you are not ingesting the steroids put into animals.  And finally, if we could save the lives of children in third world countries by feeding them the food that would be eaten by animals. Are you considering being a vegetarian, now?
