Abe did not have a rich childhood. His family was poor and could not afford to send be to school and had to have him work at home instead. Abe only had about a year of school in total. At age 8, Abe’s family was forced to move to Indiana. Abe’s mother died from milk disease when he was 9. His father traveled back to Kentucky to find a new wife and brought home Sarah Bush Johnston. Sarah was a kind woman with three children of her own.

Slavery Abraham Lincoln was against slavery. In 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation granted slaves in the south freedom.
