Borninto an African American family, Charles faced rejection but overcame manyobstacles, and became the first African American to earn his doctorate degreefrom Columbia (Biography.com editors). Charles Drew, the oldest kid amongthe middle- class family, was born on June 3, 1904 in Washington D.C.(Biography.com editors, thefamouspeople.
com editors) of six (Salas). His father, Richard Drew, was a carpet layerand his mother, Nora Burrell, was a teacher (Biography.com editors). Charlesshowed amazing athletic capabilities in football, basketball, swimming, andtrack (Biography.com editors). He shined in both the classrooms and on thefield (Biography.
com editors). Charles graduated in 1922 (Salas) and went tocollege off a sports scholarship (Biography.com editors). Charles became interested in medicine and helpingpeople after his sister, Elsie, had died from an illness (Garstecki). Charlesreceived his bachelor’s degree at Amherst (Biography.com editors). com editors). Charles registered at McGill medical school in Canadaand got accepted (Nelson). From Charles’s doctorate thesis “Banked Blood”, hewas able to receive his doctorate degree (thefamouspeople.
com editors). Charleswent to Columbia University for more studies and got his Doctor of MedicalScience degree making him the first African American to do this(thefamouspeople.com editors). Charles fell in love with Minnie LenoreRobbins while at a conference and got married on September, 23 1939(thefamouspeople.com editors). Charles became a father, when his wife had twokids (Biography.com editors). Willing to do anything to save people’s lives, Charlesinvented a unique way to process, save plasma and do blood transfusions, preventingthousands of people from dying (Biography.com editors). Charles supervised the “Blood for Britain”project, supporting residents and British soldiers who were in need of bodyfluid during World War II (thefamouspeople.
com editors). Because of hishard-work, brains, and diligence, Charles created two of the first blood banks(Biography.com editors). After all of Charles majoraccomplishments, he went to be a professor at Howards University (Biography.comeditors).
Shortly afterwards Charles became the first African Examiner for theAmerican board of surgery and a leading surgeon at Freeman’s hospital (Biography.comeditors). Charles won “the highest and noblest achievement” for all the amazingconversions and adjustments he made to the medical field (Biography.
