The book, Animal Farm, written by George Orwell is an allegory of the Russian Revolution.

The book focuses on three main characters: Napoleon, Boxer, and Squealer. These three animals represent three real people and bodies from the Russian Revolution; the three of them combined show how dark and corrupt the Russian revolution really was.In the book, the pig Napoleon is the main character and represents Joseph Stalin, the dictator thattransformed the Soviet Union from a peasant society into an industrial and military superpower. Napoleon represents Stalin in many ways; one of the ways that he mirrors him, was by manipulating the rules to benefit himself. In the beginning of the book, the farm had created “The Seven Commandments,” (17).

As time passed, Napoleon changed one of the commandments from “No animal shall sleep in a bed,” (18) to “No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets,” (47). He later did this with the rest of the commandments. This is a representation of how Stalin used his status to trick the Russian population and benefit himself. Boxer, the horse, represents the working class of Russia in that time. Boxer is portrayed as being a dedicated worker, but having a less-than-average intelligence. One way that he represents the working class is by agreeing to everything the pigs say. His favorite slogans that he uses throughout the story are, “I will work harder” and “Napoleon is always right” (43).

When he collapses from overworking, the pigs tell the rest of the animals that they have sent him to a veterinarian (82), when in reality they sent him to the knacker’s yard to be slaughtered, in exchange for money to buy a case of whiskey for themselves (86). His death shows how far the pigs are willing to go for the benefit of themselves, even if it is at the cost of other’s lives and lying to society. Squealer, the pig, represents the Russian Media.
