A Comparison of Great Art Michelangelo Buonarroti and Leonardo da Vinci Michelangelo Buonarroti and Leonardo da Vinci are two of the worlds greatest artist. In their art paintings they often exhibit the usage of detailed imagery, vivid colors and an unconventional way of creating depth and volume in their works. It is hard to compare every single piece so in this paper I am only going to focus on one piece of work from each artist. In a piece named “Virgin of the Rocks,” Da Vinci creates a painting with two women and children sitting in a cave, using sfumato,”the Italian term for a painting technique which overlays translucent layers of color to create perceptions of depth, volume and form. In Italian sfumato means “smoky” and is derived from the Italian word fumo meaning ‘smoke’. Leonardo da Vinci described sfumato as “without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke or beyond the focus plane. “(http://en. wikipedia.

Michelangelo’s piece that I am discussing can be found on the vault of the Papal Chapel. The images in his painting on the vault are a about nine stories from the book of genesis that can be read in the Bible. In the painting, Michaelangelo masters the use of color and lines to grasp the viewers attention as well as movement, using vivid colors and chiaroscuro “is a term in art for a contrast between light and dark.
