At the Boys and Girls Club, I was getting ready to move on from being a Leader in Training (L.I.T) and prove myself to be an instrumental part of the Keystone Club. Keystone is a leadership development experience, which provides opportunities for teenagers.
Youth participates in activities in three focus areas: academic success, career preparation, and community service. With the right guidance, the Keystone Clubs aim is to have a positive impact on members, of the Club and the community. To make an impact on the community, we organized various events one of which was a huge success was a Sleep Out at the club; to raise awareness about homeless people. The Sleepout included guest speakers, group activities, and a movie, all of which gave us an insight on what homeless people go through. One of the Keystone members put me in charge of a group activity for this event. I came up with a Life Board Game-with a twist as my activity. I created a life-size board for my game with either positive or negative homeless scenarios for the youth so they could get an idea of what it’s like to be homeless.
While making the board, I thought of putting popular places on spaces that impact homeless individuals such as: a shelter, jail, and a hospital. During the group activity, I explained how the game was played, read out scenarios, and kept everyone on task. At the end of the group activity everyone helped me clean up and one of the group members told me they had a lot of fun and learned a lot.
That’s when I realized I had left a good impression not only on the teens, but also on my community. I helped raise awareness for those who are in need and currently homeless, which was a humbling, influential, and creative experience. How their feedback made me feel helped me realize that how I helped in this situation is a true reflection of who I am as a person.
I was proud of myself because I kept the teens on task and did a good job of keeping things organized. I also utilized my creative side by making the Life board game, which was both entertaining and educational. Overall the Club has been a fundamental part in my personal growth it has offered me new opportunities, helped me talk to others in public, expand my vocabulary, and most of all guided me down the right path.
