Beach volleyball, which was created in 1915, originated in Waikiki Beach, Hawaii. It was created by members of the Outrigger Canoe Club, even though most people tend to believe that it originated in Santa Monica in the 1920s, which was about 25 years after indoor volleyball was created in Massachusetts. The sport was initially created to be a form of enjoyment on the beach for families, but its low cost and wide appeal caused beach volleyball to start spreading from place to place. By the 1930s, beach volleyball was being played in several places around Europe, including Czechoslovakia, Latvia and Bulgaria. It has been an Olympic discipline since the 1996 games.

Beach volleyball, for the most part, has a lot of the same basic rules as indoor volleyball does, such as the fact that players are able to touch the ball three times in order to get it over the net. However, there are also several differences that are specific to the game of beach volleyball.  Players of sand volleyball are also not required to wear footwear; they often play either barefoot or using ‘sand socks’ to cover their feet.

Furthermore, there are only two players on each team in beach volleyball. There are no substitutions or rotations for player positions in beach volleyball, unlike indoor volleyball. Additionally, in beach volleyball, it is legal to cross under the net, as long as the act does not disturb the opponent players.

There are slight differences in the courts that are used for beach volleyball and the ones that are used for indoor volleyball. The most obvious of these is the fact that beach volleyball is played on sand. Because of this, serious injuries in beach volleyball happen a lot less often due to the softer texture of the sand. Also, the standard size of a beach volleyball court is 16 meters by 8 meters, unlike the standard size of an indoor volleyball court, which is 19 meters by 9 meters. Beach volleyball, while a lot like its predecessor, has many characteristics that make it a unique sport that is enjoyed by many people all over the world. Its changes to the rules, its origin, and the changes in the court that is used in an average game make beach volleyball a great sport to play, whether it be for competition or as a method of inexpensive and fun entertainment for family and friends.
