States should devote more publicity to putting an end to child abuse. Do you believe child abuse is a valid reason why children obey their parents more? Some parents believe that hitting their child makes them more powerful and that the child will be scared of them. The youth in todays day and age are pressured y their parents to follow strict orders and if disobeyed are reprimanded for it. If people were more informed about child abuse, perhaps they would realize that hitting or neglecting a child is not only going to take a toll on them for the rest of their lives, but they might abuse their own children when they’re older due to psychological reasons from when they were beat by their parents. Most parents who 19802′ physical punishment and beatings were widely accepted methods of discipline, even for small children in the United States and other countries. ” [Connelly] The history of child abuse goes way back to the 1800’s.

“It was ot until recent decades that child abuse and neglect have been recognized as serious social problems. ” [Connelly] Back in the 1800’s, child labor was also considered what we call child abuse today because of how children were forced to work in the factories. They were from ages three to eighteen years old and were forced to work for ten hours a day in unsafe factories with machines that were extremely dangerous.

Certain states such as Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania made it illegal for children under a certain age to work in factories. If states could pass laws for child labor back then, don’t you think they should have one the same with child abuse? Child abuse victims are affected throughout their whole lives. “The effects of abuse on a young child can have both immediate and far ranging consequences. [Connelly] There are many different types of child abuse such as physical, sexual, emotional, educational, and neglect. Physical abuse is “the infliction of injury on a person under eighteen years old by a parent or legally responsible caretaker.

A parent or guardian who allows such injury to take place is also considered abusive. ” [Connelly] For example, a father sexually abuses his daughter and the mother has some sort of an dea. That makes the mother an abuser also because she knew about it and never did anything about it.There are many different ways to fgure out if a child is being physically beaten by broken bones, black eyes, bruises, being locked or held hostage in a room for over five hours, being told that he or she will not have anything to eat or drink the entire day, and if the child has been hit on more than five occasions, The book A Child Called It written by Dave Pelzer is an autobiography about his mother physically beating him throughout his whole childhood. “Out of the corner of my eye I aw a blurred object fly from her hand, A sharp pain erupted from Just above my stomach. [Pelzer p. 87] The young boy had been stabbed by his own mother.

“In 1962 the Journal of the American Medical Association first published articles on “battered- child syndrome. ” These articles showed that some families went beyond physical discipline- actually putting their child’s life in danger. ” [Connelly] Doctors became more aware to children that have been beaten by their parents.

Babies are very common prey for abusers. They get beat or shook to death because parents or care- akers find it annoying when they cry and never stop.Sexual abuse is an another type of child abuse.

Sexual abuse is ‘any sexual behavior directed toward a child or adolescent under the years of eighteen by a person who has power over that youth. Sexual abuse that involves physical contact could entail fondling the child’s genitals, getting the child to fondle the offender’s genitals, rubbing the offender’s genitals on the child, engaging in oral sex, or making anal or vaginal penetration. ” [Connelly] “The problem of child sexual abuse has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. Bender] An example of sexual abuse doesnt have to be physical. Exhibitionism is when a person shows his or her genitals to a child; showing them pornography, or creating a pornographic video with the child in it. “Parents or care-takers who allow another person to perform any of those actions scared and often embarrassed about talking about it. An example of this took place in the movie “Antwon Fischer.

” Antwon was the protagonist of the movie. He was a foster child and every time his foster mother left the house, his foster sister would sexually abuse him until the mother came home. Those past situations with Antwon and his foster sister had a psychological tole on Antwon is his future. Later on when he grew up, he was petrified to have a girlfriend because he always thought about what his foster sister used to do to him. It made him nervous to get into a sexual relationship.

“Children are more likely to be abused by someone they know. Studies show that 75-80 percent of child abuse cases involve someone known to the victim. ” [Conelly] Conelly also states the fact,” Sexual abuses children often have problems with aggressive behavior, depression, and social withdrawal, as well as motional damage. The children that are most vulnerable to being abuse are younger than 1 year at 46.

2% and 1-3 years at 34. 6%. ” [Connelly] Child abuse starts with a past history of abuse portrayed on a parents previous young. Adult survivors of child abuse often experience depression, low self-esteem, and difficulty in forming and maintaining relationships. ” [Connelly] “Statistics show that girls are sexually abuses more often than boys are.

” [apa. org/releases/sexabuse/ victims. html] Sexual offenders are usually family members or known to the child. Strangers don’t usually sexually abuse children. There are many effects of sexual abuse. “They suffer a range of psychological and behavioral problems from mild to severe, in both the short and long term. Problems may typically include depression, anxiety, guilt, fear, sexual dysfunction, withdrawal, and acting out.

” [apa. org] Children can recover to sexual abuse by going to counseling and therapy. Parents can protect their children from sexual offenders by teaching them at an early age about basic sexual education. “Teach them that no one should touch their “private” parts of their body. ” [apa. rg] “Emotional abuse- also called “psychological abuse,” “verbal abuse,” r “mental injury’- involves actions (or non actions) by parents that may cause their child to develop serious behavioral, emotional, or mental disorders.

” [Connelly p. 19] Children suffer from emotional abuse from being scared from something that happened in the past. Such as being locked in a closet for hours. “Emotional abuse is any kind of abuse that is emotional rather than physical in nature. ” [eqi. org/ eabuse!. htm] Another type of abuse is educational abuse. It is when a parent doesn’t allow a child to go to school and get their proper education.

They need to go to indergarden through twelfth grade by state law. Mental abuse is mainly seen in woman rather than men. Child neglect is “the failure to provide for the shelter, safety, supervision, and nutritional needs of the child.

Child neglect may be physical, educational, or emotional neglect. ” [medterms. com/script] Child neglect occurs when a parent doesn’t provide the child’s basic needs, such as food, clothing, or water.

Neglect is also when a parent doesnt provide their physical, educational, or emotional needs. There is a growing concern of child abuse that has been exemplified over the past ecades. Child abuse and neglect can’t be reduced solely to a discussion of numbers, because one case can be considered on case too many.

” [Camden] “The good news is, people recognize it’s a problem and they’re interested in doing consider this an issue of life and death and we are extremely concerned. Over the past seven years, social services in California have taken consistent cuts in order to help reduce deficits, but this year looks to be the most severe yet. ” [Anderson] Child abuse can be taught in school to students to help it get more widespread while they are young.Schools should have guest speakers come in once a month and talk about the dangers of child abuse and if they get abused to tell a teacher. “The best thing to do is to actually try and prevent abuse and neglect in the first place. ” [Anderson p. 2] Child abuse can be prevented by making an anonymous call if seen.

Newspapers and television can help make child abuse more public. News channels always have child abuse cases. People should watch them and become more informed and realize how important it really is. Child abuse can be reduced by putting an end to poverty. Children who do not have proper health care often get abused.Adoption laws also need to be tougher. Often, babies or children that are adopted are abused because they are not the parent’s “real child.

” Child abuse can also become more public to teen mothers from “teen parenting classes. ” “Statistics indicate that many victims of such abuse are children of teenaged parents. ” [Thomson pg. 109] Parenting classes can help end the cycle of abuse. Teen parents should attend the classes, it will teach them how to raise their baby the proper way. “The class is instructed with a doll-baby and lasts over sixty minutes, four times a week. The lifelike baby is used in many ands-on activities.

” [Thomson pg. 111] The effects on why children are abused has a lot to do with and individuals lifestyle and background. “On average, most abusive parents are in their mid- twenties, live near or below poverty level, often have not finished high school, are depressed and unable to cope with stress, and have been victims of violence themselves. ” [Connelly] Most parents who abuse their children are young and single living at home. Most parents whom abuse their children were also abused in their childhood. If parents are divorced there is also a greater chance of abuse. When a parent fghts with their spouse they sometimes take it out on their children, unfortunately.

“. Physically abusive parents will assault their children whenever they have strong negative feelings that they need to discharge. These parents seem to have little, if any, awareness of the consequences of what they are doing to their children. It is almost an automatic reaction to stress. The impulse and the action are one and the same. ” [http://www. nospank.

net/forward2. htm] Parents who are addicted to drugs and are alcoholics are also know to abuse their children. Many of hese parents also have problems with alcohol or drugs. Substance abuse is a frequent contributor to the breakdown of impulse control, though by no means is it the only one.

” [nospank. net] Stress or anxiety can also lead to child abuse. When a parent is stressed or anxious once again they might take it out on the child. Also, if a child does something wrong, they believe that hitting them will teach them a lesson, which is absolutely false. Factors that contribute to child abuse are “family structure size, poverty, alcohol and substance abuse, domestic violence, and community violence.
