Leeds over the past 100 years.

. INTRODUCTION In this essay I am going to be talking about the City Of Leeds and how it has changed over the past 100 years. I have chosen to investigate the City Of Leeds because I feel it has prospered over the years, and I would be interested to explore the factors which have contributed to it becoming one of the largest cities in the United Kingdom. Leeds started off as a small village with a population of around 200 (in 1086).

The town was founded by the Lord of the Manor, Maurice De Gant, in 1207.Around this time Leeds was a small and insignificant town which consisted of utchers, bakers, carpenters and blacksmiths, yet the main industry was the production of wool, (Localhistories, 2013). The factors I will be concentrating on to show the trend of change in Leeds are the Economy, Immigration, Population and Retail. I have chosen these four factors as I feel these have shape shifted Leeds to what it has become today. DEVELOPMENT POPULATION By the start of the 20th century Leeds had reached a population of around 178,000 and from there onwards it continued to grow promptly making it the 4th largest city in England.Events such as the First World War included regiments being made up of en from certain towns. Therefore if one regiment suffered substantial losses, this would result in a town/cities male population to decrease significantly. Leeds was a city which was affected by this system.

However during the Second World War, this changed and regiments were made up of men from different cities/towns. ECONOMY The University Of Leeds was built at the beginning of the 20th century at which the economy started to change.During this era there had been a huge development in the medical establishment, places such as Leeds General Infirmary and St James’ Hospital were developed. In Leeds after World War 2 there had been a mass drop of industrial income thus leading to a decline in the industries, but this all changed when new industries e. g. call centers, retail shops gave the economy a boom. 55% of people were employed in the manufacturing side of this industry. Engineering and tailoring were the main industries with companies such as Burtons.

Leeds City Council itself was a major contributor towards employment, it employed 19,000 in 1946 and thirty years later the fgure has escalated to 35,000 people. RETAIL Kirkgate Market is the largest indoor market in Europe, the building was finished in 857 and built because of the great request of food halls and shopping markets. Fish row was a devoted area of the market for fishmongers which was a huge success as it helped to expand to wholesale and retail customers, because of this it made Leeds Kirkgate Market a significant trading site in the I-JK.Shopping arcades were built at the beginning of the 20th century which sparked an immense reaction of people to flock towards them. The wealthy middle classes’ ‘necessity for luxury belonging was developed by Charles Thornton at Headrow and Briggate.

There was not only a place or them to shop but also for entertainment purposes such as the theatre. It helped as wealthy middle class people had a lot to spend and as there was already a high enough demand there was already a set target population.IMMIGRATION The population of Leeds increased dramatically at the beginning of the 20th century. This was due to the increase of Jewish immigration. There main aim was to reach the United States, however many of them lacked funds therefore couldn’t reach the US, leading to them settling in the cities like Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool.

Leeds was he largest city to have gained Jewish immigrants, up to 561 families has settled down here. Many Jewish immigrants based their Jobs on the textile and clothing industries, they were being given a considerable amount of cheap labour.During the 20th century Jewish individuals had helped Leeds boom as an economy and as a city bringing it’s status economics status high up. Today, immigration stands at an all time high, more than a fifth of all people that live here were born outside of the I-JK.

Over a million Eastern Europeans have made their home in the I-JK over the past ecade, only a few being supplied Jobs due to them being able to speak English, but this has helped us gain experience in other workplace.CONCLUSION Over the past 100 years life in Britain has changed in a lot of ways, intensely in relationship due to technology, retail, economy and immigration. Today, people of Britain can access enhanced services like electricity, shopping malls such as Trinity, Victoria Quarter, there are changes that have been made in the means of transport, increased access to computers, which have given us a better understanding of verything around us, even for younger children. The introduction of better telephones and mobile phones and increase in the average weekly wages and standards of living. Much has taken place over the past 100 years and Leeds BIBLIOGRAPHY www.
