Google has managed to use and maintain some of the most important design principles, which have included ensuring that people of all abilities are able to use the design, the designs are relevant, and that they are able to perform their intended functions. Finding a good design is important because it helps in creating balance, while at the same time adding variety, which is good for user experience. Balance ensures that the user gets what he or she is looking for, whereas variety adds more options for the users to choose from. In the process, they get to learn more about the business. A good design enables people to feel a connection with their environment. A good design ensures that users can get information readily and easily.

It enables the user to find the relevant information in the midst of all the information available.[1] Good design embraces creativity, which in turn depends on intuition. This creates spontaneity in design. Google has incorporated the principles of design in its work, and this has given it some advantages. The company believes in creating intuitive, simple, and beautiful designs that will please their users. The company encourages creativity in coming up with different designs, and they ensure that their innovations will go towards fulfilling the needs of the users. The company designs are suited for use with different devices. Since people use Google in different computers and mobile devices, the company has ensured that it has incorporated designs that people can use on their devices without causing them problems.

The company understands that users will judge its performance, based on the way it chooses to design its products. Because of this, the management has found it necessary to redesign the company, and this has included the introduction of new elements. The inclusion of applications such as Google maps and Google+ has worked to the advantage of the users. In introducing new designs, the company has to consider its main objective and function. It does not incorporate designs that will hinder it from delivering its main mandate, however good those applications and designs seem to be. Flexible designs are able to perform more functions, but they are less efficient compared to specialized functions.

Flexible designs compromise on usability because of their creativity.[2] By committing itself towards its objectives, the company has been able to maintain a level of consistency and relevance, which assures the users that they will always get the products or services that they are looking for in the company. The users are able to use more applications, without navigating through numerous tabs. This has made the work easy for the users.

Google uses design by committee, which means that there is no single person responsible for the design. Instead, different teams work together to come up with the designs and to implement them.[3] There are different teams, but they work together. The teams share information with each other, and this ensures that they come up with sound and consistent designs. Design by committee is necessary when dealing with products of a high quality and when the requirements for delivery are complex.

It is also necessary when people want to avoid errors.[4] Google intends to build quality products and services, as this will ensure delivery that is more efficient. The company has designed its products in such a way that they ensure simplicity and are accessible to everyone.

Many people like the simplicity of using the search engines. The inclusion of different apps such as images and maps, make it easy for a person to search for the exact thing that he or she intends to find. Despite the advantages of the Google design, some people criticize it for different reasons. Some of the design features that offer numerous advantages to some people are a disadvantage and inconvenience to others. For instance, the Google instant gives people a chance of seeing the multiple choices available when searching for a product. The users do not have to type in all the words of their search, since the search engine determines the different options available. The users then decide on the options to choose.

Some people criticize this, and they site the fact that it does not appear elegant, and that it presents irrelevant options.[5] Google is the largest search engine in the world, and it has managed to maintain a lead position for several years. Google’s main objective is to drive more people towards it. It sells ad space, and this helps it in generating more money. The advertisers know the popularity of the company, and this has ensured that more advertisers use the site for advertisements.

The company uses a different form of attracting advertisers. Although most of its revenue comes from advertising, the company does not accept all the advertisements presented. Instead, the company auctions its advertising space to the most relevant bidder. The company uses Adwords to place the relevant adverts nest to the search results, making them accessible to any person searching for content using the search engine.

[6] The advertisers pay the company whenever a user clicks on an advert. Google has an Adsense program, which enables the company to help the people who advertise with it to extend their advertising campaigns to other company networks. The company has developed display advertising, which includes the use of images, videos and other interactive advertisements. It provides this form of advertising through double click.[7] Since Google provides its services free to the users, it has to find ways of making revenue. The company has managed to do this by developing different ad campaigns and programs to suit different tastes.

Although this has benefited the advertisers because it has created diversity and given them a range of options to choose from, it has nevertheless led to some controversies, especially among the users. Some of the users feel that by allowing the targeted ads to run, it contributes to less satisfaction on the user since it is a cause of distraction. The company has to think about its design since it has to incorporate space for the ads.

Despite the criticism that people have of Google advertising, it is important to note that its idea of displaying the ads next to the search results is different from other ads such as banners and pop up ads. The preferred method of advertising does not interfere with the search results, and the users only click on the ads that interest them. They are not bombarded with information that would force them to click on adverts regardless of whether they are interested in the ads or not. [8] Google has worked to ensure that it presents a good design, which is relevant to the users. The Google design is simple and creative.

It is easy for people to use, irrespective of their abilities. Users are able to find the information they need in the midst of all the information available. Google uses other applications that enhances the design and makes it more interesting. The use of the extra applications adds to user satisfaction. Bibliography: Business Model Design.
