Hannah KronzMrs. HolleyEnglish 4 (4th)10 December 2017Control in MacbethEveryone longs to have control in any situation. All throughout history there has beenmany problems with control, and wars are started over it. We see control problems in the playMacbeth written by Shakespeare. Macbeth is a general and a Scottish Nobleman with the titleThane of Glamis in the beginning.

The play Macbeth is about a man who receives threeprophecies, from the Weird Sisters which are known as the goddesses of fate and destiny.(Document A) Macbeth is listening to the Weird Sisters during the entire play. They arepromising so much to him but will he stay the same? If the wrong person receives all the controlit can go out of hand.

Is too much control a problem? Many might say yes, because you can strayaway from your morals. As seen in Macbeth, he started out innocent, but as he gained morepower and control he lost sight of himself. Macbeth is like a puppet on strings, and their is apuppet master. A puppet master controls every action the puppet does ,and in this case it is theWeird Sisters. Lady Macbeth as you can see is very demanding and it seems like she runs the show. Butit is not true at all Lady Macbeth has very little control in Macbeth. She is all talk she tells peoplewhat to do but she can’t do it herself. As she says in Act 1, Scene 7 on page 2 “I would while itwas smiling in my face, Have pluck’d my nipple from his boneless gums, And dash’d the brainsout, had I so sworn as you”.

She really said that she would bash her own babies head in, but shedidn’t have the nerve to kill Duncan herself she made her husband do it while she hid the daggers(Document B). Act 1, Scene 5-7 Lady Macbeth taunts Macbeth by saying “My hands are nowKronz 2the same colour as yours, but I would be ashamed to have such a cowardly heart”. In this sceneshe is basically saying I have the same colour on my skin as you , and I’m more calm stopworrying about everything.

By calling him a coward has sparked a fire in Macbeth’s heart toprove her wrong. I believe she is trying to stir up the pot by telling Macbeth he is a coward.Causing him to think about it and kill even more people. Lady Macbeth started this monster alsoknown as Macbeth. Macbeth is the main character in this play , but he does not have the most control eventhough the play is called Macbeth. Macbeth is following other people’s wishes , and he islistening to what people tell him like his wife.

Macbeth’s first kill is his friend, Duncan the kingin Act 2, Scene 2. After he stabs Duncan he goes back to Lady Macbeth and says, ” I have donethe deed” (Document C) . In Act 1, Scene 1 on page 47 she says to Macbeth “When you durstdo it,” then she continues to make fun of him,”then you were a man”. She is taunting him andmaking him feel bad about his morals. He is going through with the actions so he is in control.

Macbeth could have set her straight and he didn’t have to her. I believe that Macbeth wants toprove everyone that he has all the control in the play. Lady Macbeth made fun of him yes , butshe didn’t help stab Duncan with the daggers that was all Macbeth’s action. Yes there is such athing called peer pressure, but you have the final decision of what you want to do. Peer pressuremeans to have influence on one. Some people can be good or bad influences but it doesn’t meanyou follow them. This means that Macbeth didn’t have to do all the things Lady Macbeth, or useany of the things the Weird Sisters told him. Macbeth is getting out of control in this play.

Hestarted as a innocent man and slowing became a monster. Yes, he has some control and that’swhy he is getting out of hand in the play.Kronz 3 All throughout this play we encounter the Weird Sisters . Since the beginning they arethe ones to really start this story. The Weird Sisters said to Macbeth “All hail, Macbeth! hail tothee, thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth, thoushalt be king hereafter!” they predicted the future in Act 1, Scene 3 (Document A). They call himThane of Glamis which her is right at that point, but then they call him Thane of Cawdor pluscalls him king. After they tell him that he is now named Thane of Cawdor. So, apparently theWeird Sisters know what they are talking about.

Macbeth goes back to the Weird Sisters in Act4, Scene 1 to get more information. That is when he sees the apparitions and they tell him tobeware Macduff, the power of man none born of woman, and Macbeth shall never vanquish untilGreat Birnam wood to high Dunsinane hill shall come against him (Document D). They werecorrect about this information, and Macbeth when to then because he knows they will tell hisfate. The Weird Sisters are in control of all the people in the play. I think they are controllingMacbeth by telling him the truth, because he will act upon it.

Meaning everything the WeirdSisters tell him he will do everything to make it workout smoothly. The real meaning of controlis “the power to influence or direct people’s behavior or the course of events”, according to thedictionary. Which the Weird Sister have influences Macbeth’s behavior this entire play. Causinghim to change from a good person to an evil monster. They have been telling the truth this entiretime about what is going to happen to Macbeth , and what has happened. I believe the WeirdSisters have all the control in this play. If they didn’t have any control then how did they knowMacbeth would be Thane of Cawdor or King. Macbeth sees this and puts his faith in the WeirdSisters because they were correct about him becoming Thane of Cawdor.

The Weird Sisters arebasically the producers of the play. They control everything that happens. The Weird SistersKronz 4also mention “none of woman born shall harm Macbeth” Act 4 , Scene 1 on page 91-92.Macbeth was killed by Macduff who wasn’t born naturally, he was taken out of thestomach. When I think of control I describe it as you have the power to do anything. Which theweirds sisters do they have total control in the play, because they know everything that is goingto happen in this play.

It is a powerful thing they have in their hands. The Weird Sisters are intotal control in the play Macbeth. I feel as if the order of control in the play Macbeth ranking lowest to highest is LadyMacbeth, Macbeth, and the Weird Sisters.

Macbeth in this play is just following the leader andwhat they say as I stated before. Without Lady Macbeth her husband wouldn’t have killedDuncan and she started this killing frenzy. Which leads to the Weird Sisters providing Macbethwith the future and what is going to happen. If the true definition of control is to influence thebehaviors of others, I would have to say the Weird Sisters have control.

They have been incontrol since they told Macbeth the three prophecies. Causing him to turn into something evil.Macbeth will never be the same as he was in Act 1.Kronz 5Works CitedHoshine, Ken, and William Shakespeare. Macbeth.
