In ,To Kill A Mockingbird, We learn that in Maycomb County killing a mockingbird is a sin, and the definition of a mockingbird is the innocent who have been injured or destroyed through contact with evil. Throughout the novel, a couple of characters could be considered as a mocking bird, such as, Tom Robinson, Boo Radley, and Mr. Raymond. This is because, in the story they are accused of something, and they are innocent, but people have destroyed them as a person. In Tom Robinson’s case he was accused of rape, but was innocent, but in the end he was found guilty and later died. In Boo Radley’s case, he was supposed to be a crazy killer, but by the end of the story he was known to be a good guy, and a hero. Finally in Mr.

Dolphus Raymond, pretended to play drunk, because people of his race stayed away from him, because he like blacks, and had mixed kids, but in the end he was a good guy that drank coca-cola all the time. In, To Kill A Mockingbird, Mayella Ewell is caught up in a problem where she tempted Tom Robinson, which is an African American, so once she is caught by her father in the act she says Tom Robinson raped her. Once she does this they go trial where Tom is found guilty, but he’s clearly innocent. From this Mayella Ewell would probably be considered as a villain, because she got a innocent man, found guilty of a crime he didn’t commit, and he later died because of it.One reason why she should be seen as a villain should be because she lied on an innocent man to get herself out of trouble. This is found out because in the text it states, “She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man.

Not an old Uncle, but a strong young Negro man. No code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterwards.” (pg. 204).

This quote explains why she would do such a thing. In Maycomb County a white women would never be seen with a black man it was a code, but Mayella broke the code, but didn’t want to face the consequences. This is one reason why she should be seen as a villain.Another reason is, because she was a  “home wrecker”, because in the novel we found out, he’s a hard worker, and a married man.

This is backed up by Mr. Link Deas when he speaks on Tom in court. In the text it states, “Mr.

Link Deas rose from the audience and announced: ‘I just want the whole lot of you to know one thing right now. That boy’s worked for me eight years an’ I ain’t had a speck o’trouble outa him. Not a speck.” (pg.

195). This confirms that Tom has a hard-working trait. In the novel it also talks about Tom Robinson being a family man taking care of his wife and kids, but once the trial started Tom’s family wasn’t the same. Once you have heard all of this there would be no question if she was a “home wrecker”, or also a villain. On the other hand, Mayella Ewell could be claimed as a victim too. In the story we learn that Bob Ewell, her father, was abusive, physically, sexually, and emotionally. Then we also find out that Bob was the one that force Mayella to say Tom raped her, and he was the main person getting the trial started. After knowing all this you could see why she is somewhat a victim.

She was also a loner and secluded from society, and when Tom came by she was probably a little bit too happy. Mayella just being a Ewell has an effect on her, because in Maycomb County the Ewell’s are seen as, “white trash”, dirty, rude, so they are hated. These are some reasons why she could be seen as a victim. In Conclusion, Mayella Ewell should be seen as a villain, because she accused a innocent man of rape, because she couldn’t handle the consequences of her actions, but Tom was the complete opposite, and was innocent. In the text it states, ” “It must have been disorderly,” said Atticus. “What did it consist of?” “Got in a fight with another man, he tried to cut me.

” “Did he succeed?” “Yes, suh, a little, not enough to hurt. You see, I—” Tom moved his left shoulder. “Yes,” said Atticus.

“You were both convicted?” “Yes suh, I had to serve ’cause I couldn’t pay the fine.” (pg. 190). This quotes shows how Tom did the crime, so he faced his consequences, in which Mayella didn’t, which cause a man to die, and his family not operate the same as before.

At the end of the day through all that Mayella has went through, this incident could have been the time she rebelled, and did something instead of going along with Bob Ewell due to fear. She could have easily just faced the consequences of her actions, but she decided to lie to get out of it, and in the end a man and his family was affected by it..
