In The Information age, there is muchinformation spread worldwide using internet. Anyone can putanything via the internet such as personal perspective or propaganda whether true or not even unreliablemedical information. Many people search and update for information on anysearch engine through the internet in rapid way. Unfortunately, some of them believedthat what they found is accurate even that information is outdated orillogical as we know in the news reported over the world.
Outdated and illogical informationcan cause misleading or miscommunication in every part of community. Manycountries around the world believed that to overcoming this problem we must bean information literate person. To be informationliterate, you must be able to realize when information is needed to use and whereto find it in scholarly search engine. Then you must appraise that informationand use it effectively way. To become information literate person, the InformationLiteracy (IL) skill is needed. Information Literacy defined as oneof the essential skills for 21st century learning outcomes. It isthe skill that students need to succeed in work,life and citizenship. It has been used by many educators and schools worldwide.
1Many organizations defined meaning of IL such as UNESCO; they defined InformationLiteracy (IL) as the transformation of information into knowledge. It is used in conjunction with problem solving andcommunication skills as an integrated set of skills which people need to beeffective in all aspects of their lives.2 It clarifies one dimensionof these complex abilities, and enables a distinction to be made between theeffective use of information, and the supply of, and access to information. Theyalso creating and preserving educational policiesfor information literacy. They operate with instructors around the world,training them about information literacy and providing resources for them touse in their instructions. Their goal is to establish information literate communities.The Association of College andResearch Libraries (ACRL) proposed that “information literacy is a set ofabilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed andhave the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the neededinformation with ethically way”.3 They provide the five standardsand twenty two indicators to be guidelines for implementationand assessment of information literacy programs.
The Framework is based Bloom’staxonomy of Educational objectives from lower order skills that able to recognizewhen information is needed and where to find them. Higher order is to evaluateand create new information. This Framework is conceptual understandings andused worldwide.
The information evaluation processis a crucial skill and basis for one of the educational outcomes called lifelonglearning. Lifelong learning is a learning process that continuously throughlife and is everywhere in order to accommodate to rapid change of informationage. Lifelong learning and information literacy (IL) have a strategic and commonlystrong relationship that is necessary in the success of every individual,organization, institution and society within the information societies. ForHealth profession educational institute, literature also showed that IL skill help encourage andcultivate lifelong learning and use of evidence-based practice such as TheInstitute of Medicine (IOM) released a report entitled Health ProfessionsEducation: A Bridge to Quality in 2003, whichrecommended that the core competencies for health professions education arepatient-centered care, interdisciplinary team, evidence-based practice, qualityimprovement, and informatics.4,5 Thus, educationalinstructor has to train their student to differentiate between fact and opinionto become an information literate person before they become a health profession.Nursesare care provider whom their quality of care need to up to date thus; searchinginformation on the internet is the best way to find out. It is the economical method and suit for people whom their work is verybusy and lack of time,searching on the internet may reduce time consuming. Moreover, nurses are theprofessions whom their nursing care raises questions about the evidencesupporting their use to deliver care.
To ensure quality of evidence theirsearch and adapt to nursing care, they must be an information literate nurseand follow the Evidence-based nursing method. Melnyk and colleagues suggestedthat Staff nurse, advance practice nurse and faculties is the key to facilitatingskills including computer skills, information literacy and the ability to usedatabases to find relevant evidence.6 Thus, being the informationliterate nurse (especially in healthinformation) is theessential skill that must be immersed to all nurse professions.
Beinghealth information literate person is the important skill for nurse toefficiently locate, search and choose credible medical information that canimprove patient care and reduce health care costs. It can help nurse accuratelyevaluate and make good clinical decision to solve patient’s problem. Moreover, healthinformation literate nurse can update new knowledge or technical skills bysearching and locating on nursing journal databases to find the best proveninformation, good interventions from experts and others scientific knowledge, finallybecome a lifelong learner in The Information Age. Educating nursing studentabout Health information literacy (HIL) and encourage them to use it is helpful.Moreover, it may increase their confidence about evidence their found and usedwhen they become a nurse profession.
Health Informationand computer literacy and nursing informatics are the essential competenciesfor nurse profession indicated by Thailand nurse and midwifery council fordecades. Educating students in HIL is a challenge for nursing education asteaching HIL in curriculum may improve knowledge and skill how to locate andevaluate credible health information, but do not ensure what level of knowledgeand skill of HIL in nurse students through the curriculum. In present, computerliteracy is not a problem for nursing student who is a digital native but thereis no evidence was found about health information literacy in Thai nursingstudent. There is limitation of current state of HIL skill in Thai undergraduatenursing students. Therefore, it is important to know level of that pivotalskill of nurse students before they become professional nurse, to ensure thatthey possess that skill and may ready to be health information literate personand lifelong learners.
According to Albert Bandura’s socialcognitive theory, he proposed that the successful of a task will increase self efficacyand enhance them to further participate. Nursing student will need self efficacyto use their own abilities, especially in health information literacy. Therefore,the current study also want to evaluate undergraduate nursing students’ perceptionof HIL self efficacy. Furthermore, the results of this may be the clue toimproving teaching and facilitating methods for enhance students to possess thatskill and use it in their work life because this is a firststep to prepare students for their professional role and autonomy of patient care.
