A resume is one of the most important documents of your job application. It gives the employer an overview of your qualifications. Therefore, you should highlight your education, work experience, and skills as per the job you are applying.
Key Components of a ResumeThe purpose of a resume usually contains the following five key sections:1. Contact2. Education3.
Experience4. Honors and activities5. SkillsContact SectionIt is important to include your contact information at the top of your resume. It should be easy to read, attractive, and clear. It should be the first thing that the employer looks, and easily see how they can contact you. Make sure you include your full name, phone number, permanent address, and e-mail address.Your name should be at the very top, stand out, in larger font size, centered, and in bold. You may draw a horizontal line at the end of your contact information and the next section of your resume (Alison, 2017)Example:SALMAN M.
HASSAN98616 Jomo Kenyatta Street, Mombasa 80100(254) 722 81 82 [email protected] SectionAn education section highlights your relevant academic qualifications. It is a necessary element that leads you to be called for an interview. The place of you your education section in a resume depends on your work experience. If you don’t have many years of experience or have just graduated, then your greatest strength is obviously your education not your experience. Therefore, in this position, your education section comes first. The education section usually includes about your previous schools, their locations, your graduation year, the degrees you earned, and your GPA if it is above 3.
0. Your education section should be listed in reverse chronological order. For example, if you have a master’s and bachelor’s degree, list the master’s degree first.
If you have not completed your degree, then specify the program and the date of you graduation. It is important to match your education to the job you are applying. For example, if you are applying for a social work position (counseling).International University of Africa, KhartoumMaster of social work, expected to graduate in May 2018Umma University, NairobiBachelor of Arts, Psychology, February 2014GPA: 3.9Mbale University, KampalaDiploma course, counselling, December 2010GPA: 4.0Experience SectionThe work experience section in a resume describes your previous employment information. This section can be called work experience, work history, employment experience, relevant experience or professional experience. It is where employers will confirm if you have the experience required for the vacant position, and compare you with other applicants, and choose the best suitable for their organization.
Therefore, your work experience section will effectively tell whether your interview will or will not be considered. For this reason, the work experience is the most important section in your resume. In this section, you name the companies or organizations you have worked for, duration of employment, the position or titles you held, and list of your responsibilities and achievements. It is important to attach all of your experiences with the job specification of your target position.
Internship experience, volunteer experience, and temporary positions, all should be listed in your work experience, as long as you can connect the experience with your profession.(Charley, 2017). Any promotions on your job can be mentioned in this section. Example:Shifa Medical Centre, DubaiSocial work internship, Jun 2015 – March 2016- Provided after care for chronic adult psychiatric population- Conducted individual psychotherapyBusy Bee Nursery Service, NairobiVolunteer, Feb 2001 – Dec 2001- Conducted play therapy for preschoolers with behavioral problems.
– Provided support counselling and services to parents.Honors and Activities SectionIncluding relevant information about your honors and activities in your resume can attract your employer. Adding such information, gives employer a reason to differentiate between the many job applicants. Honors and activities can be important professionally, and can show and tell your potential for leadership, teamwork skills and your professional experience. You may not have much work experience, but adding honors and activities can emphasize skills sets that are worthy to many employers. It is important to add honors and activities that will be fruitful to the particular job you are applying. This may include scholarships and academic awards, membership, leadership positions, work-related awards, honors and date of awards, and dates of involvement in activity.
( Peterson’s Staff, 2017). Example:AUN Academy, Volunteer, May 2002 – Dec 2002University Student Union, Chairperson, 2013-2014Equity Academic Scholarship, 2011-2014Skills SectionHaving skills section in your resume, make it easy for employers to confirm your qualifications quickly. Therefore, all your useful abilities that were not mentioned in your work experience section can be listed in this section, which also referred as “Additional skills”. This section makes it simple for the employer to detect whether you have a specific skill required for a position. It is important to list and expand your skills that are relevant to the job you are applying, as the closer your list suits the skills required for the job, the more chance you get for the job. If you have different types of skills that are important to the job you are applying for, you can include more than one skill.
For example, if you are applying for an administrative position:· Fluent in Arabic, English and French· Proficient with Ms Word, Excel, and Power PointConclusionThe purpose of resume is to show your education, experience, and skills, and that you are a professionalism for the job. Not everything can appear on your resume, and the order can change from application to application.Recruitment studies show that, the employers spend only few seconds looking at a resume during the hiring process.
So the most important thing is to tailor your resume in the way that it meets the requirements of the job applied, and above all, laid out clearly. ReferencesConlan, D., (n.d.). 5 Critical Elements of any Resume. Accessed on 9th December 2017. Retrieved from: https://www.
