Randall StroopeI chose to write about Z. Randall Stroope for my choir paper. Z. Randall Stroope is an American composer.
He was born on October 25, 1953 in the town of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is currently sixty five years old.Not a lot is known about his early life. He graduated the University of Colorado, earning a master’s degree in voice performance. Stroope earned his doctorate at Arizona State University for conducting.Z. Randall Stroope first began composing pieces at the age of 10. But, it was not until he wrote The Cloths of Heaven and Inscription of Hope that he gained popularity.
Stroope has published over 165 pieces. Some of his more famous pieces are Lamentaciones de Jeremias, I Am Not Yours, Homeland, Song to the Moon, and Go Lovely Rose. More recently, he has conducted at Santa Maria (Rome), Singapore, Canterbury Cathedral (England), Berliner Dom (Germany), St. John (Canada), the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in (Washington D.C.), and many more.
In the summer he is also the Artistic Director at two summer music festivals in Europe. The Cloths of Heaven was the piece that really gained Z. Randall Stroope attention. The text was written by William Butler Yeats and published in 1899. I chose this song, because it was the song that made him known. The Cloths of Heaven is a slow song, the lyrics are over a hundred years old, but still very relatable to this day. It was written in SATB and is three minutes and thirty-six seconds long. The only instrument in the piece is the piano and overall it is a pretty easy song.
The Cloths of Heaven is written in English and has a very dramatic feel, but I don’t hear it as sad or happy. To me the piece is telling a story, a story that needs to be told. It relates to everyone differently. My favorite part of this song is how well the piano brings all the voices together.https://www.jwpepper.com/Cloths-of-Heaven/1589696.

Rusalka was the fortieth most performed opera during the 2014/15 operatic season. Song to the Moon was composed in SATB and originally written in Czech. There are flute, oboe and piano parts, which give it a very haunting sound. I really liked how well the slow tempo, flute, and oboe all went together.
That and the Czech singing really gives Song to the Moon its haunting feel. I really liked Song to the Moon because it makes you feel like you’re on the moon. Like you’re all alone out there, but not scared, just taking everything in.
This song is very unique, and I really enjoyed it.https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/song-to-the-moon-la-luna-sheet-music/19520963https://www.
youtube.com/watch?v=XieeQcgQLns Come Dwell in Solomon’s Walls is another slow piece. It is about calling non-believers to the house of God.
It was written in English for SATB and also has a piano part. I really liked this piece because I really like religious songs. Come Dwell in Solomon’s Walls has an overall happy feel. It definitely makes you think about how lucky you are. I really liked this song, even though I didn’t think I would.https://www.
jwpepper.com/Come-Dwell-in-Solomons-Walls/10012686.item#/submit I really liked Z. Randall Stroope’s songs. All three of the songs I listened to were very different, but still had certain similarities that you could hear. Out of the three songs I wrote about, my favorite would have to be Song to the Moon.
Its haunting tone really won me over. Song to the Moon is one of the few foreign songs that I really like. All three of those pieces are very different than what I normally listen to, but I still enjoyed them a lot. I had lot more fun on this paper than I thought I would.
It was very interesting to learn about such a talented composer. Given the chance, I would love to meet Z. Randall Stroope.
He seems like a very interesting person.http://www.zrstroope.com/Sources CitedGreen, Aaron. “Lyrics and Translation of Dvorak’s “Song to the Moon”.” ThoughtCo, www.thoughtco.com/song-to-the-moon-lyrics-and-text-translation-724031.
