DonohueEnglish 121/25/18 1960-Present The argument discussing whether the biggest technological advance happened between 1900-1959 or 1960-Present is still a question that has no real answer but only opinions. Now yes, the technological advances between both eras are impressive, but 1960-Present clearly has had more success with technology. Not only have inventors made Phones,TVs,Microwaves,Refrigerators better, but in July 1959 the most useful invention of all, the microchip, created by Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce. The Microchip controls everything with buttons.
“Microchips are used in many electrical devices besides a computer. In the 1960s, federal government agencies began purchasing microchips for their projects.”(Cora Lauderdale). The Air Force used microchips to build the Minuteman II missile. NASA purchased microchips for their Apollo project.Today, microchips are used in cell phones that allow people to use the Internet and have a telephone video chat. Microchips are used to keep track of activities and information.
Microchips are also used in televisions, GPS tracking devices and ID cards. In 2009, a British researcher named Mark Gasson turned himself into a “walking microchip”. A small chip had been inserted under the skin of his hand, and by waving his hand he could pass through security at his University in Reading, also he was able to unlock his phone by holding it.The television is a worldwide phenomenon and loved by all. “Few inventions have had as much effect on contemporary American society as television” (History of Television). The first ever electronic television was displayed on Sept 7, 1927 in San Francisco, California. The TV was created by Philo Taylor Farnsworth. Phil had lived without electricity until he was 14 years old.
The television was one of, if not the most popular inventions in the 1950s. But throughout the years TV is still one of the most popular purchases individuals make. Ever since the first TV was presented we have made incredible progress from the 1960s through today in improving the TV in size and quality of the picture. The TV is still improving today and in the future will still be one of the greatest inventions ever made. Now another huge technological breakthrough was the invention of the game console. “A video game console is an electronic, digital or computer device that outputs a video signal or visual image to display a video game that one or more people can play”.The first ever game console was created by Ralph Baer in 1966 but did not become that popular in nearly a decade since then. Through the 1990s and 2000s the game consoles have been improved dramatically to offer more functions such as CD players, DVD players, and Blu-ray players.
One of the most popular gaming systems to this day, The playstation, was the first ever game system to ship 100 million units. 10 years later the Playstation 2 came out and still to this date has the highest game console sales in history selling near 200 million consoles since its release date in 2000. The device known as the computer, which everyone loves, Is a machine that is able to take information , and process it to make new information. These machines have existed for much of human history. A computer is a programmable machine.
The two principal characteristics of a computer are: It responds to a specific set of instructions in a well-defined manner and it can execute a prerecorded list of instructions. The first programmable computer, the Z1, was created by Konrad Zuse in his parent house between 1936 and 1938. It is considered to be the first really functional modern computer. But once again throughout history we have improved the computer greatly with the size, quality, and storage of every computer worldwide. The 1960s and later was the greatest era for technological advancements because even though most technology was invented, everything was improved greatly from the 1960s and later.
Without all these improvements technology would not be as popular or as useful. One of those inventions is called the Cell Phone. The cellular phone is almost a must need device in today’s modern day, most kids and even some adults are addicted to their phone and social media. The history of the cell phone, Motorola was the first cell phone company to produce a handheld mobile phone. On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive, made the first mobile telephone call from handheld mobile phone, placing a call to Dr.
Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs, his rival.
