Admit it. We’re all different. We’re different in so many ways it’s impossible to count them, it’s like counting the number of hairs we have on our head. We all have unique and physical characteristics, as well as different personalities. Even identical twins have different opinions about different things. In our society, we tend to create problems that derive from the issue of individuality, even though we are encouraged to respect each other because of our differences. The problem with individuality is that people tend to disrespect and disregard others’ dignity and feelings because of their differences.
Individuality is natural. Jerry Spinelli demonstrates the nature of individuality through his book, Stargirl. Stargirl is an individual who was described as elusive, different, and rare. People were afraid to get close to her at first because she was so different. Then, she became the most popular girl in the school. But after she did something no one that no one could possibly forgive her for, she was shunned and neglected. I’d like to point out that this part of the novel is a perfect example of society disrespecting an individual’s dignity and feelings. This type of behavior is intolerant and immoral.
Each and every one of us was customarily chosen by God as his chosen instruments from the moment we were born. We were all created in his image and in his likeness. The individuality that God gave us had no conflict, no jealousy and no quarrel, no ego and no pride. We are given the opportunity to make our own decisions but we often make the wrong ones. We were given individuality to respect, to use and to grow from it, not to humiliate others. To maintain the respect that was meant for us, we must learn to recognize and appreciate the individuality of others. We can compare ourselves to snowflakes.
No two snowflakes are identical, and so are us humans. No two humans are exactly alike physically and emotionally. Besides the fact that no two humans were created exactly the same, our culture teaches us a concept that is definitely wrong. We are taught to believe that we can gain power and authority at the expense of someone else. It’s absolutely unacceptable to do so because this will also lead to other problems like violence, name calling, and even put-downs. People don’t just make fun of others to gain power, but they also make fun of others because they’re jealous.
They’re jealous because another person has something that they don’t. So basically, some people tend to take advantage of people who stand out or are different in a way that makes others feel uncomfortable. In the book Stargirl, Hillari Kimble portrays a selfish attitude towards Stargirl. She doesn’t think about Stargirl’s feelings and she shows lack of respect for human dignity. She doesn’t only cause hatred between her relationship with Stargirl but she’s also trying to make people around hate her like she does. Millions of people each day, dream about being someone different, but we must face the fact and figure out who we are.
Once we find out who we are, we’re halfway through a successful and happy life. Like I said before, the main issue about individuality is that people take advantage of others and disrespect each others’ dignity all because we’re different. Just because we shouldn’t disrespect those who are different, it doesn’t mean that we can’t express ourselves. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. To conclude everything I’ve said, I quote from Robert Orben, an author and editor, “A graduation ceremony is an event where the commencement speaker tells thousands of students dressed in identical caps and gowns that ‘individuality’ is the key to success. “
