DMZ Name: Course: Institution: Instructor: Date: Network A network is a link of several computers, which share different computer facilities such as files or computer resources with the use of cables, infrared light beams, telephone lines or radio waves (Sikora, 2003). The Local Area Network (LAN) and the Wide Area Network (WAN) are the basic types of networks. A network gateway is a system linked to the internet that combines two networks using different base protocols, it can be executed in both software, and hardware forms. The installation of a network is important because it enables administrators to be connected to employees or students using the networked computers. DMZ A Demilitarized Zone refers to a firewall configuration that provides security for the Local Area Networks (Alexander, 2008). The firewall configuration secures the computers on the network to shield traffic problems and attacks that may come from the internet.
It acts as a proxy server that prevents direct access by external users to the local area server. A firewall is a barrier in the network system that is intended to prevent destructive agents from the public networks. A DMZ configuration allows users in the LAN to send their requests to the host so that they can access external or public networks.
LAN The Local Area Network is a type of network that is limited to a small area such as office, school or building. The LAN is characterized by a server that is connected to the other computers in the relatively small area. The server operates on services such as files or data storage and retrieval, messaging, software hosting, faxing, printing or on security basis such as complete access control (Sikora, 2003).
Connection of computers and the server can be done via cables or without through a wireless connection by Wireless Access Points (WAP). For the wired LAN, Ethernet cable is needed to connect all computers physically to the switch. A switch is a device that directs information on the network and for the LAN to be connected to another network a router is required. Network connection has more speed with cables than with WAP hence cables are mostly used. WAN Wide Area Network (WAN) has a larger geographical scope since it covers wider regions and it can be used for a global connection.
Global connection is done by satellite uplinks or transoceanic cables. The complex network enables people from different parts of the world to communicate with each other within a short time (Sikora, 2003). It is built using leased lines with each leased line having its end connected to a router conjoining two or more LANs. A router is a connection device that forwards data packets to different sections of a computer network. A single WAN is controlled by multiplexers, routers and bridges for the connection of local, metropolitan and global networks. Servers, Http, FTP A server is a host computer that serves the requests of other computers in a Local Area Network.
It integrates network devices so that information can be shared, stored or retrieved within the area by the different computers (Sikora, 2003). FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, which enables clients to access file server. The FTP service allows users to download, upload or mange files remotely.
The HTTP refers to Hypertext Transfer Protocol, and it is used in the World Wide Web. It is an application that builds a network by using logical links otherwise known as the Hyperlinks. It, therefore, works to transfer hypertexts. UTP Upper Lines The UTP cable refers to Unshielded Twisted Pair cable that is found in a Local Area Network for the Ethernet. The cable can be used for a telephone network.
The UTP cable has four stranded wires enclosed by a polyurethane outer sheath. It can be classified into Category 3 (CAT 3), Category 5 (CAT 5) and Category 6 (CAT 6). The cable is used to network computers to share one line of communication or divide the connection of the internet. Fiber Open Fiber Open is a protocol in telecommunication that ensures connection of both ends of a fiber optic cable before the transmission of laser signals. This protects the users from eye-damage. When both ends of the fiber are connected, the active device switches the laser on fully. The fiber open provides open and direct access to telecommunication devices. TCP Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is an original property of the Internet Protocol Suite (IPS), which transmits a stream of bytes between different programs in different computers.
It is used by E-mail, World Wide Web, transfer of files and remote administration. The protocol enables communication between an application program and the Internet Protocol (IP). TCP complements the IP, which exchanges packets in the communication process. Bandwidth Bandwidth in a network is defined as the amount of data that can be transmitted in specific or standard time and is denoted as bits or bytes per second (bps).
It, therefore, measures the rate of data transfer across a network. The higher the bandwidth, the more the information passed. References Alexander, P. (2008).
