On December26, 1996, in Boulder Colorado, JonBenet Ramsey was found murdered in her home. She was a 6-year-old beauty queen following her mother’s footsteps. Her parentswere Patsy and John Ramsey and she had a 9-year-old brother named Burke.
Thiswas an ordinary family that was used to being in the spotlight. December 26thwas supposed to be a big day for the family. They were going to fly in John’sprivate plane and take a Disney cruise. That morning, John Ramsey heard ascream which was his wife who found a three-page handwritten ransom note.
Thenote claimed to be written by kidnappers who were foreign and demanded $118,000in return for JonBenet. John Ramseydecided to search the basement and found his daughter dead. She was found witha rope wrapped around her neck and the same rope wrapped around her wrists. Atthe end of the rope was a broken paintbrush from Patsy Ramsey’s art set. Thatwas when they knew she was not kidnapped. She was murdered. The question was,who murdered JonBenet? Because there were so many people in and out of thehouse and the fact that John Ramsey moved his daughter’s body and removed tapefrom her mouth, the scene was contaminated.
This caused major distress to thedetectives because this meant that now some of the evidence that was theremight be gone. Theinvestigation started with matching the handwriting from the ransom note. Therewere some similarities between the handwriting on the ransom note and PatsyRamsey’s handwriting. Detectives also found that the ransom note was written onPatsy’s note pad because there was a page that seemed to be a practice writingof the note and the note’s handwritingmatched the practice writing.
The family completed about 150 hours’ worth ofinterviews along with DNA sampling and testing. John refused to talk to thepolice and Burke kept changing his side of the story which made authoritiessuspicious of him. Dr. John Meyer is the one who did the autopsy on JonBenet.
He said that the cause of death was suffocation and forcible trauma to herskull. After manyyears, the grand jury found Pasty and John Ramsey guilty on 2 counts of childabuse resulting in death and accessory after the fact to first degree murder. In 2006, Patsy Ramsey died of cancer and John Ramsey remarried. John Ramsey tothis day is trying to find out who killed his daughter.
