Deviance is a large scale problem in all sport. There are many reasons for this and I will explain them throughout my essay.Major games such as the Olympics and world championships are everyday riddled with high profile incidents where athletes are caught out by the testers. The games are a giant shop window for people and nations to prove their worth and sport is the best way to do this over 3 billion watch the games. With such popularity people want to see the best of the best and don’t want to watch a 100m final run in 10 seconds, they want a world record breaking time all the time and this pressure leads to my first deviance of drugs in sport.Ben Johnson is a controversial former Canadian athlete, best known for his disqualification for doping use after winning the 100 m final in the 1988 Summer Olympics.
At the 1987 World Championships, in Rome, Johnson gained instant world fame when he beat Lewis for the title, setting a new world record of 9.83 seconds as well. Johnson won both the Lou Marsh Trophy and Lionel Conacher Award, and was named the Associated Press Athlete of the Year for 1987.
The East Germans became a sporting powerhouse in the 1970s and ’80s, rivalling the much larger United States and Soviet Union. Thousands of East German athletes were given performance-enhancing steroids in an effort to prove East German superiority over the West. Many athletes thought they were simply taking vitamins, but this is a large scale example of systematic drug use for the benefits of winning.
Winning provide many things for sports people as it is just the stem of the tree, branching from it comes endorsements, sponsorship, prize money, national and world wide recognition. All of which lead to money! Many athletes would say that they take these “aids” to level the playing field because if the guys on their left and right are on the drugs what is the point of my running off my own guile. Not all deviance is drugs are the winter Olympics proved when Tonya Harding was involved. She captured national attention beyond the skating world on January 6, 1994, when she was clubbed in the knee by Shane Stant, who was hired to assault her by Tonya Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and friend Shawn Eckhardt. This is the ultimate die to win attitude that has been installed in most americans.
Vince Lombardian is famous for his win at all cost attitude. With this gigantic will to win the organisers of the games face a growing problem because the companies that provide these athletess with the drugs are on a higher level of economical grow than that of the governong bodies. The governing bodies are also disbanded and this spereation gives the athletes more loop holes to do their devent behaviour. Such problems like,* Testing only during competetion* Some countries banning athletes for life and others not after a drug conviction. There is an improvcement though as governing bodies like UK athletics and IAAF are now convicting the instigators in the crimes, such as balco founder Victor Contae and everyone in his organisations (eg Marion Jones, Tim montgomery, Dwain Chambers).Until there is more unity between the leaders of these organisations there will be a problem that no one can solve.
