The Library of the HealthSciences–Peoria is a regional site of the University of Illinois at Chicago(UIC) Library with 350 print journals, more than 4,000 online journals, andmultiple online databases. An overview was intended to evaluate online journaluse, print journal use, database use, computer literacy levels, IL level andother library user characteristics.
An overview was sent through group mail toall (471) UIC Peoria faculty, residents, and students. Ninety-eight percent ofthe students, faculty, and residents reported having convenient access to PCassociated with the Web. While 53% of the users indicated they searched MEDLINEat least once a week, different databases showed much lower usage. In General,71% of respondents showed a preference for online over print journals whenconceivable. The investigation found that users prefer online resources toprint, and many choose to access these online resources remotely. Comfort andfull-text availability appear to play roles in selecting online resources. Thediscoveries propose that databases without connections to full text and onlinejournal collections without links from bibliographic databases will have loweruse.
These findings have implications for promotion of library resources, andend-user training (IL).
