A sign of Meningocele is seeing a bulge in the skin. In lots of cases, thereare no other symptoms of Meningocele. Most Severe FormThe most rare and severe form of Spina Bifida is called myelomeningocele .Piece of the spinal nerves pushes out of the spinal canal, and the nerves are frequentlyinjured. A bulge in the skin is a symptom. In some newborn babies, the skin is wideopen and the nerves are shown. What causesSpina Bifida?Theexact origin of Spina Bifida isn’t known. Scientist believes that the genes andthe environment are part of the origin.

An example, women who have a child withSpina Bifida are more likely to have another child with the same disease. Womenwho are overweight  or who have diabetes arealso more likely to have a child with Spina Bifida.  Symptoms of Spina Bifida No feeling in most parts of body (legs, feet, or arms) so children may not be able to move those parts of the body.

Bladder or inside problems, such as leaking pee or having a hard time passing stools. Liquid buildup in the brain (hydrocephalus). Can be treated but can still lead to learning problems, seizures, or vision problems. Scoliosis (a curve in their spine)Treatment Lots of childrenwith the mild form of Spina Bifida don’t need treatment.

Children withmeningocele (more severe Spina Bifida) don’t need treatment sometimes too. Butchildren with the most severe form (myelomeningocele)usually need treatment.Sometimes surgery to correct rare Spina Bifida can be performed before the babyis even born.A child who has hydrocephalus (fluid buildup in the brain) will need surgery.  Doctors put in an extract tube called a shunt. It minimizes pressure on the brain by movingexcess fluid into the belly. This keeps the lump from causing more harm to the brain.PreventionWomen who are pregnant can prevent Spina Bifida.

Someways are the following: Don’t drink alcohol while you are pregnant. Alcohol may affect your baby’s health. Some medicine can cause birth defects so make sure to talk to your doctor before hand Stay away from having a hot body in the first weeks of pregnancy. Do not use go in a steam room, hot tub, or sauna. Treat a high fever right away. The heat could raise your baby’s risk for Spina Bifida.

Why should we be concernedabout it?Weshould be concerned about Spina Bifida because the average life span for anindividual with the condition is 30-40 years, with renal failureas the most typical cause of death. 80% – 90%of children with Spina Bifida will also develophydrocephalus. The substance that shields the brain and spinal cord is called cerebralspinal fluid. When a child has hydrocephalus, cerebral spinal fluidis not able to move freely and will later on build up inside the head causing forceinside the brain. What steps are societiestaking in order to cope with new challenges in this condition in childhood?Firstly, good routines are something that is encouragedfrom family members who have a child with Spina Bifida. There are many steps you can usesupport your child with Spina Bifida.  Havedoctor appointments regularly.

Help your child be energetic, and encourage him/herto be as independent as possible. Motivate your kid to drink plenty of waterand eat foods high in fiber, such as whole grains and fruits. Fiber helps preventconstipation. Check your kid’sskin all the time.

Children who have little to no feeling intheir legs and feet may get hurt and not know it. And that could lead to aninfection. See an optometrist often;kids with Spina Bifida often have weak eye muscles.Talk to school teachers and principals before your kid enters elementary school.Lots of schools have programs for people ages 3 through 21 with special needs.
