`Statement of PurposeThe world has seen a remarkable revolution inindustries, from using steam power, to mechanize production, to use ofelectronics and information technology, to automated production.
The IndustrialRevolution 4.0 is something that is transforming humankind unlike anythingexperienced before. I, as an electrical engineer and working professional inthe energy industry, acknowledged and am intrigued by emerging technologyfields such as robotics, the Internet of Things, Big Data, artificialintelligence, autonomous vehicles, and energy storage. I am extremely eager to devotemy long-term career to such a dynamic, fast advancing field of digital industry.
I was accepted into the Sardar Patel Collegeof Engineering, Mumbai, due to my exceptional performance on my seniorsecondary exams. My freshman year was flawless. My firm grasp of basic sciencessuch as physics, mathematics and chemistry facilitated me immensely inappreciating the fundamentals of the subjects covered in the curriculum. However,the smooth-sailing ship began to sink when I experienced a sophomore slump. Thisreally was the turning point for me in realizing that I had to get it togetherand put forth more efforts. I visited professors after class to learn more andclear doubts.
One of the professors appreciated my effort and helped me get asummer internship. As a result, I developed a keen interest and sufficientaptitude for Electrical Engineering. I completed the course B.E.Tech (Hons) inElectrical Engineering in 2015 with an earned CGPA of 7.
23/10. As I progressed through my undergraduatestudies, I gained substantial knowledge in subjects like computer programming,power system, renewable energy source, electronic circuits and control system.I focused more on learning about power system and integration of renewableenergy source in present power grid. I also focused on learning the electroniccircuit, control system, its application in the field of robotics.
Simulation insoftware like MATLAB, PROTEUS and ETAP further enhanced my understanding ofconcepts. Hence, my undergraduate studies have provided a strong foundationwhich will certainly help me to understand and analyze the concepts involved inthe industrial Engineering curriculum.I have made the best use of the opportunitiesand training programs with which I have associated myself. During my sophomoreyear, I completed an internship at 500 kV HVDC Terminal Station in Padghe,India, studying the transmission and distribution of electricity. I alsounderstood the benefits of using HVDC over AC transmission, especially when itcame to efficiency and cost optimization.
Moreover, off-the-class trainingexperiences added greatly to my knowledge of core concepts in electrical engineering,besides introducing me to fresh ideas and techniques.In the final year, I worked on a projectunder Professor Nandkishor Kinhekar to maximize a photovoltaic (PV) system’soutput power by continuously tracking the maximum power point of the system.The project aimed to address two of themost fundamental drawbacks in the areas of solar power generation-lowefficiency and high capital cost. I and a team member developed an algorithm toimprove the solar panel’s efficiency. We had a tough time developing thehardware, which was executed in Arduino UNO. At a certain point, the projectappeared to be going downhill as we were not able to execute the algorithm intothe code. Working with my project guide, we spent hours every day for almost amonth tweaking the code.
After combining this with intense brainstormingsessions, we were finally able to successfully complete the project, improvingthe efficiency of the PV system by an impressive 85-90%. Apart from academics, I was interested andpassionate about extracurricular activities. I was part of the organizingcommittee for the college’s annual festival ‘SPACE’, where I was in charge ofthe logistics team. This event was a test of teamwork and leadership skills. Mystrong interpersonal and problem-solving skills enabled me to successfully performmy role as a team leader. Overall, my undergraduate college experiences havehelped me in enhancing my management, leadership, and interpersonal skills andhave made me a responsible and socially aware human being.
Finally, a job in hand, even beforecompletion of a degree was the culmination of my hard work and persistencethroughout my undergraduate studies. My well-rounded college experience helpedme to be recruited by the Japanese EPC consultancy firm, Toyo Engineering. Oneof my most illuminating experiences during the two years I spent in the companywas a high-profile project RAPID-Ethylene Cracker Complex for a clientPetronas, Malaysia. In the very first task I had used my analytical and mathskill to calculate bill of quantity of grounding material. I completed the taskefficiently and saved 86% man hours allocated to this particular task i.
e. 240man hours. I used simple excel table and extrapolated data of previous projectto calculate the quantity for entire plant. I was appreciated for my approachby my manager and Japanese counterpart. Now this excel sheet prepared by me ispart of Toyo’s reference document, it has already used in many project as. Workingin consultancy for more than two years familiarized me with all the vital skills required in an oil and gas industry,it also helped me in enhancing my analytical, communication, and decisionmaking skills.
I was extremely thrilled by the experienced gained from theproject and was motivated to further explore industrial engineering.The digital method of manufacturing andsupply chain management, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning,cloud computing and more, that are already established in leading globaleconomies like the US, are now in the forefront in India, an economy which has untilnow been embedded in traditional ways of doing business. There are enormous challengesto for Indian industries in order to achieve global competitiveness on pricefront for the manufactured goods. This goal can be accomplished byimplementation of operations research, mathematical modeling, and optimizationof complex processes or systems, equipment, energy, materials and logistics, toname a few. I sensibly chose master’s program in Industrial Engineering as itwill provide opportunity to discover innovative solutions to challengingproblems.
On successful completion of the program, I aspire to pursue my careeras a consultant and help industries in India implement sustainable manufacturingpolicies, setting new standards for safer and smarter performance.The Master’s Program in IndustrialEngineering offered by Arizona State University (ASU) provides opportunitiesavailable to learn state-of-the-art technologies, access a vast pool oftechnical resources, and gain from the experience of its faculty, which willenable me to accomplish my career goal. ASU’s faculty and students have beenmaking remarkable advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, datamanagement and mining, energy-efficient computing, healthcare delivery andinformatics, learning technologies and social networks among many other areas.
Iwould regard my admission to the School of Computing, Informatics, and DecisionSystems Engineering at ASU not only as a great honor and success but also as anobligation to work diligently. I believe that the excellence of this program,along with my ability and motivation, will help me to attain my goals.
