The ”tell-talehearts” is a short story written by the famous author, Edger Allen Poe. Buttoday we will be reading a literary analysis, on why the tell-tale hearts is ahorror story. The authors use of imagery, suspense, and allegory to create ahorror fell is most important, in our process of deducing the stories true behind,in it all. The narratorin this story talks about how is he hunted by the eye of the old man the helives with, the eye described as a pale blue eye, with a film over it, and thatit reminded the narrator of a vaulters eye, blood rains cold whenever it fellupon our dear narrator. The narrator then decides to kill the old man, but hecan’t do this without looking only at the old mans eye and without looking athis face. I think that the authors use of both imagery and allegory to describethe old mans eye is well suited for a horror story title so far.
And thenarrator’s fixation on the vulture eye is an added bones, the narrator talksabout how vultures pray on the dead thiscould be the symbolism the narrator takes towards the eye. ”Howwisely I proceeded-with what caution-with what foresight-with whatdissimulation I went to work! I was never kinder to the old man than during thewhole week before I killed him.” This on its own is pretty creepy, I mean who talksabout how nice he is to someone before killing them. the narrator watches theold man sleep for 7 days to shine a thin ray of light the old man’s eye untilthe old man hears the narrator’s foot steps, and wakes up calling “who isthere” now you might think the narrator ran a way but no he stayed ,for that itwas so dark that that the old man could not see him, even if he was in front ofhim. He stood there for as long as an hour, he the opened the crevice of thelantern . The author uses this scene to create a sense of suspense the lack offoreshadowing works well for the scene.
When the narrator gazed upon the eye hegrew furious and, had decided to strike the old man with a killing blow. Ithink the author uses imagery to create suspense in this scene not only bydescribing a murder scene but by the way the sentences is structured. As the unnamednarrator contemplates his decision hestars to hear a familiar sound. “therecame to my ears a low, dull, quick sound such as watch makes when enveloped incotton I new that sound to it was the beating of the old man’s heart” no one knows the relationship with the old manthat is between the narrator but I havea theory that the beating of the heart is guilt for the old man’s love .witchmakes it even worse, who would kill some one they know, some one the love for aeye.Conclusionthe author “Edger Allen Poe has created a horror story about an old man with aneye ulcer as described, the narrator unnamed and genderless is hunted by theeye witch is primary used to crate plot multiple times in the story
