The relationship between Macbeth and his wife is crucial to the understanding of how much more evil she is than macbeth, and who is responsible for killing king Duncan.
It would appear to be an equal partnership between the two at first. However, Lady Macbeth shows to be the the commanding of the two characters. She is full of driving And ambition she is willing to do whatever is needed to achieve power.
She values power and wealth over human life ,Firstly, Lady Macbeth evil character is demonstrated by her lack of a Conscience. she shows this when she states..” that no compunctious visitings of nature shake my fell purpose, nor keep peace between the effect and it!”. She prays to be dull with no human compassion so she would not feel anything for the murder of King Duncan and the Rest of her evil Deeds,This shows that Lady Macbeth is willing to do anything to achieve her evil ambitions, even if it means that she has to ignore basic human compassion. On the other hand Macbeth has Human compassion and a Conscience. An example of this is, when he murders King Duncan, Macbeth struggles terribly with his guilt,He is so guilt-ridden that he mistakenly brings the murder weapons he used to kill Duncan with him from the room in where he is killed,And when Lady Macbeth orders him to return them, he cannot.
He says “I’ll go no more. I am afraid to think what I have done”(65-66)This brings up the point of Lady Macbeth’s evil ambition. When Lady Macbeth reads the letter Macbeth had planned to give to her, of his plan to murder king Duncan,She immediately displays her ambition and willingness to assist him in murdering King Duncan.Lady Macbeth wholeheartedly believes Macbeth will become king but worries he will be too kind to follow through with such a brutal deed. as she says,”Yet do I Fear Thy nature; it is too full o’th’ Milk of human kindness to catch the nearest way: thou wouldst be great, Art not without ambition, but without The illness should attend it”(1.
5 3-7) Macbeth Soon learns that King Duncan is visiting the castle,at this time Macbeth has no intention of killing King Duncan,Macbeth believes there is no reason to take drastic measures and kill King Duncan,he will naturally become king without the need for any drastic measures. when Lady Macbeth learns that King Duncan will be visiting the castle that night , she gives Macbeth her soliloquy to persuade him to go thru with the murder, that the only way to achieve power is to murder him.. This supports that the relationship is more one sided than it should be, and shows she can Manipulate macbeth to do whatever she pleases, she does not openly exercise her power over him around others this is why she gave him her Soliloquy when the guards left the room, In private she uses dishonor and emotional corruption to manipulate Macbeth to do whatever she believes is needed to be done.
This strongly supports the fact that Lady Macbeth is the more evil character, and is much more in control. Another example of Lady Macbeth’s evil is her Reckless ambition When lady macbeth learns about the witches prophecy, that Macbeth will be king, and learning that macbeth had slight thought of murdering king duncan, She immediately jumps to the conclusion of killing king Duncan to achieve power. Her blind ambition, made her not realize, that The Witches did not specifically say how Macbeth will become king,They did not state that King Duncan needed to be murdered, they only stated that Macbeth will become king.
Lady Macbeth’s Reckless ambition, also causes reckless plans. in turn when she Realizes King Duncan is visiting the castle that night, Fueled by her blind ambition she plans an idea for the murder of King Duncan Her Recklessness ,makes King duncan’s death possibly in vain. Too add on to King Duncan’s death, the small window of opportunity to kill King Duncan, causes the plan to Circum many problems.Which brings up lady Macbeth’s ability to manipulate Macbeth.
When King Duncan arrives to the castle, Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to go through with the plan to Murder King Duncan, that he promised to do.But Macbeth Becomes extremely nervous and wants to back out, Lady Macbeth uses her manipulator abilities to persuade Macbeth to go through with the plan to murder King Duncan, by insulting his masculinity. Lady Macbeth states that her husband is a coward,” and live a coward in thine own esteem” She does not hold anything back when She scoffs him She knows that by doing this she will be able to get Macbeth to go through with the murder. Lady Macbeth also persuaded Macbeth by taking care of the planning making sure he had not to worry about anything but murdering King Duncan, she makes sure that Macbeth has access to the daggers, and when Macbeth kills King Duncan He is so guilt-ridden that he mistakenly brings the murder weapons with him from the room. While Macbeth was panicking Lady Macbeth calmly disposed of the daggers by framing the servants by leaving the murder weapons on their persons. This not only Proves that Lady Macbeth is much more evil than Macbeth, it also shows that Lady Macbeth is much more responsible for the murder of King Duncan than Macbeth is. In conclusion Lady Macbeth is Clearly the more evil character compared to Macbeth. We see Lady Macbeth’s true nature can be reflected through the imagery of blood, violence, and death,As she has been from the beginning of the play she is set out on an expected course of destruction.
Lady Macbeth has proven to be an immense influence on macbeth throughout the play. When macbeth tries to backout of murdering king duncan she proves to be a big inspiration by persuading Macbeth back on the path to kill King Duncan. she has managed to completely change Macbeth’s mind and carry out King Duncan’s murder Lady Macbeth is much more wicked than Macbeth, We have seen that Lady Macbeth is willing to do anything to accomplish her evil ambitions, even if it means that she has to ignore human compassion,She values power and wealth over human life, and she demonstrates her cruelty throughout the play many many times.Wishing to be Desensitized to have no conscience, to be unsexed like a man.http://nfs.sparknotes.com/macbeth/page_30.html
