The artist Gericault has used line in his Painting ‘the raft of the medusa’. Line is considered a fundamental element of art and has been used by several painters over the years. The use of lime is mostly applicable to two-dimensional paintings. Lines in art can be used to conjure different responses. Most notably, painters have used line in order to express emotion. Several line styles exist in the field of art.
These different styles enable the artist to employ a mixture of styles to come up with a painting that will illustrate whatever the painter intended. There are two types of lines, rectilinear and curvilinear lines. They are used in different instances. Curvilinear lines are employed in the painting of a feminine figure. This is because they have smooth edges that portray the feminine characteristic.
Rectilinear lines, on the other hand, are clear and often have pointy angles. An artist intending to infuse a harsh and energetic feeling into the painting uses them. Gericault has used line in his painting in order to influence the viewer’s emotional response to his painting. The painting is in static creation. It is the responsibility of the writer to evoke a sense of life and activity in the painting. Gericault has used this technique to stimulate this feeling in his painting.
The use of line offers a more dynamic option to the artist. Lines are often considered a better alternative to horizontal compositions. Horizontal works are stable and strong, but they have a certain lifelessness attributed to them. Lines, on the other hand, particularly diagonal lines summon a sense of movement in the painting. In the raft of the medusa, the artist has used diagonal lines to signify the movements of the raft on sea. In addition to this, the lines also illustrate the movements of the people on the raft as they signal to the ship approaching them.
2. The artist, Gericault has used chiaroscuro to add to the drama of the painting. Chiaroscuro is a method of painting that was first notably used by Leonardo Da Vinci. He used it on several of his famous works most conspicuously on the ‘Madonna of the rocks’. Several artists who came after him especially during the Baroque period used the style in their paintings.
Such artists include Reubens, Caravaggio and Rembrandt. Chiaroscuro involves the deliberate use of light and dark shades in a painting. The contrast created with this mixture infused a sense of life in the painting. Chiaroscuro makes a painting more dramatic and vibrant due to the use of different shades of color. Gericault has used the chiaroscuro technique in this painting to make it more dramatic and dynamic. This is evident from the different colors the artist has used in the painting of the ‘raft of the medusa’. The painting is of a group of people at sea aboard a raft. The artist has depicted the sea to be extremely turbulent.
He has achieved this vivid effect by the use of chiaroscuro. One part of the sea is painted in dark shades while the other part has a considerably lighter shade. The darker shade implies a sense of doom, which signifies the turbulence of the sea. Gericault has also used chiaroscuro when painting the people on the raft.
The dead people or the ones who seem to be dying are painted in dark shades while others are painted in brighter shades. This has enabled the artist to bring out the difference between the situations of the people aboard the rafts. Where one of the people is waving towards, is the brightest part of this painting showing the hope the people have of being rescued. He has achieved this effect by the use of the chiaroscuro method of painting. From the painting of the raft of the medusa, it is evident that Gericault has used chiaroscuro to add to the drama of the painting (Rosenblum & Janson, 2005). Reference Rosenblum, R.
