Psychotherapy is one of the treatment approaches used for depression. This refers to a psychological method where a psychologist relates with an individual with the result being a dialogue that helps the individual to deal with the problems facing him or her.

The depression psychotherapy is mainly of two types: interpersonal therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. During the interpersonal therapy, the individuals are helped to comprehend and work out their troubled personal relationships that may be the cause of their depression (National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2010).In cognitive behavioral therapy, the psychologists teach the individuals to recognize negative thoughts that may be the cause of their depression and then replace the thoughts with positive ones (NIMH, 2010). They include monoamine oxidase inhibitors, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclics, and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (NIMH, 2010).2. Electroconvulsive therapy This is a technique that is applied in cases of failure of both the medications and psychotherapy. It involves passage of an electric current through the brain resulting in the production of seizures. This leads to increased release of neurochemicals thus alleviation of mood (NIMH, 2010). Is the treatment approach supported by research? Describe, if you can, the results of the research done on this treatment approach. Research has been done which supports psychotherapy as an effective treatment technique for depression.

Cognitive behavior therapy has been shown as a treatment technique with very rare cases of relapses because it deals with the root cause of the problem and not just superficial treatment (NIMH, 2010). According to NIMH, the symptoms abate in almost 65% of the individuals undergoing cognitive behavioral therapy (NIMH, 2010). Compare and contrast the therapy approach with at least one other therapy approach for this problem.

Compared to use of medications, psychotherapy is better since it has no side effects and it does not lead to unusual behaviors such as agitation and sleeplessness which are seen with use of medications (NIMH, 2010).Both therapies are comparable in terms of alleviating depression symptoms. Psychotherapy is limited in cases of severe depression in which case medications are the best for fast alleviation of symptoms (NIMH, 2010). The best therapy is obtained by a combination of both medications and psychotherapy.Reference National Institute of Mental Health. (2010).
