fiction
made-up; fake

science fiction
stories that tell imaginary scientific things that could happen in the future

historical fiction
a made-up story set in the past

biography
a book a person writes about someone else’s life

autobiography
a book a person writes about his or her own life

fantasy
an imaginative writing often with visions

fable
a made-up story that teaches a lesson; usually has talking animals

folk tale
a story handed down from generation to generation by word of mouth

myth
a traditional story that explains natural events such as stories of the gods, heroes, etc. Some people believe they are true.

poetry
words written or spoken in rhythm, expressing strong ideas or emotions, sometimes rhymed

interview
a meeting between two or more people; questions are asked to get opinions or information

mystery
a story involving secrets that are usually revealed by the end of the story

drama
a story containing human problems, dialogue, and action; could be made into a play or movie

essay
a short writing dealing with one subject from a personal point of view

brochure
pamphlet; hand-out; guide

directory
a book listing names, addresses, etc

report
a written account of facts
