stanza
a group of lines arranged together

internal rhyme
a word inside a line rhymes with another word on the same line

slant rhyme
imperfect rhyme, close rhyme, near rhyme

rhyme scheme
a pattern of rhyme (usually end rhyme, but not always); this pattern is shown with letters

onomatopoeia
words that imitate the sound they name

alliteration
consonant sounds repeated at the beginnings of words

simile
a comparison of two things using like, as, than, or resembles

metaphor
a direct comparison of two unlike things

hyperbole
exaggeration often used for emphasis

personification
an object, something natural, or an animal is given life-like qualities

imagery
language that appeals to the senses

rhyme
the repetition of words that end with the same sound (cat, bat, hat, chat)

line

unconventional poems
no recognizable pattern, no formal style, possible incorrect grammar, spelling, or capitalization

traditional poems
formal style, specific number of lines and/or stanzas or regular pattern of rhythm and rhyme. Follows the rules.

the repetition of vowel sounds in words that don’t end with the same consonant (bow and down)
